Here we have the start of another Custom HO Scale Model Railroad for a client in Texas. This system has a custom track plan and is designed to represent a logging rail line that will eventually include several large custom built craftsman kits including the McCabe Lumber Company that will feature several watershed areas nestled amongst custom rock outcroppings. Water features will include one large river feeding the log pond with several tributaries and waterfalls. The log pond damns will show spillways for overflow and a great place for a fisherman to spend a long weekend.

This layout has three elevations that will feature some half a dozen custom built wood and steel trestles. Along the McCabe saw mill side of the layout, several water features will provide accents to a log pond and water damns. In addition to the wood trestles throughout the layout, this area will be separated with two smaller log trestles to support the mill in terms of the log dump and service line.

The system has been designed for Digital Command Control (DCC) with an North Coast Equipment (NCE) throttle and booster system. The layout will feature three independent powering districts with supported breakers to ensure uninterupted operations. All turnouts are #6-8 Shinohara or Peko type turnouts with controls via Tortoise switch machines. As with all of out pikes, turnout controls utilize 2 mm LED’s attached to a double pole-double throw toggle switch. With the LED red the operator will be given an indication that the switch is diverging or aligned against the train. With the LED green, the operator will have an aligned switch for clear trackage ahead.

The 2.5 layer helix was custom designed with a 2.0 to 2.5% grade elevation and offers a 27″ radius. This enables the operations to climb from the lower level to the top level of the of pike with adjustable 1/4-20 rods and plating. Weighing in less than 22 pounds with framing and rods, the helix is removable from the modular benchwork. Total modular sections for this pike consist of 11 pieces; all of which rest on “L” girder bench work. Each module consists of retractable legs with 2″ risers and 2″ conduit holes for feeders and/or accessory wiring. Maximum radiuses on this pike range from 22″ – 30″ radiuses. As seen in the video, the Athearn DCC 4-6-6-4 Big Boy had no problems operating on the system or the helix. We’ll have more videos of this locomotive climbing up the helix shortly. However, we apologize about the clarity of the first video featuring the locomotive making its descent down the helix; it more impressive with the ascent.

This pike will be completed with track, wiring and unfinished custom scenery for a “Gold Series” offering. Our client will be completing the ground cover, coloring and installation of building and vegetation once the system is installed in Texas. Interestingly enough, for those modelers just considering getting started, our client has completed the construction of two of the most challenging craftsmen style structures on the market; and he’s just getting into the hobby. Moreover, he has two smaller railroaders that will be helping him maintain (and maybe) operate this system.

Stay tuned for updates on this and other Custom Model Railroads from American Eagle Railroad Group.
